Surgical correction of the ears (Otoplasty) can restore proportions. The surgery can reshape deformed, prominent, or protruding ears. One of the key factors in achieving patient satisfaction is patient expectation. The higher the expectation, the lower the satisfaction. Body image is unique and what the patient frequently sees may not be what is seen by the surgeon. Therefore, it is important that you become keenly aware of your expectations of the procedure, know its limitations and fully discuss any concerns that you may have regarding the procedure with your surgeon.
An otoplasty can be performed under local anaesthetic, with or without sedation or a general anaesthetic, as a day surgery procedure. Various surgical techniques exist for performing otoplasty. |

| Procedure |
|
| The procedure will take approximately 1 ½ hours. A small incision is made in the crease behind the ear. The cartilage is then molded by the strategic placement of stitches to form the necessary folds and then stitches are placed behind the ear. These stitches are responsible for mobilizing the entire ear backwards and closer to the head. A supportive and protective dressing is then applied. |
